Out of all the kitchen counter top materials, granite is probably the most solid and durable. It is no surprise that granite has become the most popular choice in counter tops, and it is featured on countless home improvement shows.

All surface materials require some amount of regular maintenance. While granite is one of the easiest natural stone surfaces to care for, it can become dull or stained over time around sinks and high traffic work areas. Prevention is key!

Granite is a costly investment, though, and it must be properly maintained to ensure a long life of the investment. For this reason, it is very important to have counter tops sealed at the time of granite countertop installation, and to have them resealed regularly.  Granite sealing and resealing is important because it is a naturally porous stone. The pores in granite slabs and the spaces between the crystals in the surface are filled with sealant without a trace being left on the outer surface when the job is done right.

Sealing Granite Surfaces

All granites will benefit from being sealed properly, which the installer/fabricator can take care of for you. All light-colored granites must be sealed properly to prevent water and other liquids from being absorbed. With the right daily maintenance, a good sealer can last for up to ten years!

A Note on Cleaning Products

It’s important to check cleaning labels to ensure a product is safe for use on stone before applying. A daily stone surface cleaner should not leave behind residue.
